Do snakes sneeze?

dasnakeguy Nov 22, 2003 04:40 AM

For the past few days I been hearing a high pitched squeak/sneezing sound coming from my female pyros tank. The only way I can describe it, it sounds like a sneeze. It's not constant but I have heard it on occasion. I can't exactly see her in the process of sneezing because she's usually under the substrate or in her hide box but there's nothing else in the tank that would be making the sound. I'm worried it might be signs of a respitory infection. If so, what can/should I do about it and what could have caused it? She eats fine and acts normal otherwise. I'll be taking her out of her tank today and transfer her to a rubbermaid with papertowels for now, for observation. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You are wise to keep her under close watch. Yes, snakes sneeze.
An occasional sneeze is normal and nothing to worry about. An ongoing, regular pattern of sneezing should be checked out asap.
Since snakes are using only one lung, respiratory problems can be deadly. If sneezing seems to persist, make a vet visit if you can. In the mean time, go to the forum most specific to your snake, and let them know what's up. Causes, cures or warning signs for your animal will be best talked about there.
Best of luck. Duffy
