A brief synopsis of herp movement here in Connecticut. Because of the unusually harsh winter, movement was greatly delayed. Wood Frogs, traditionally the first herp outin these parts, were not heard or observed by your's truly until March 20. Normally, I'm chasing them off the road by February 25. The Spring Peepers, usually out around March 11, did not call here until about the 22 of the month this year. As the season has progressed, herps are moving, most notably Black Rat Snakes, with reports of at least one Eastern Hognose and several Ringnecks made. Copperheads were found by a colleague some seven miles from here last weekend. Despite a terrible winter and a typically lousy spring, the herps are on the move here.
