sick uro, what should I do?

elykyllek Nov 22, 2003 12:33 PM

I was at the local pet store yesterday and they now have a tank of yellow saharan's (they called them yellow uromastyx...). The females in the tank look pretty healthy, but the male is very thin and lethargic, and perhaps a thin white film on his back. I'm thinking about rescueing him. Any suggestions on what to do if I do get him. Special medications, vitamins etc that would help in his recovery?

Thanks

If you have the chance to rescue him, make sure you have a decent seperate enclosure ready, i use rubbermaid tubs for rescues. Then get the temps correct and so forth. Once that is all done make sure he is on paper towels and put him in. Giev him greens and once he poops look at it yourself; if it is mushy/watery get it tested. If it looks normal it might just be a waiting game. Most petstores do not have the correct conditions therefore their animals are normally very sickly looking/acting.
Keep us updated, and dont buy him! Call your local ASPCA and say you will take him or something.
Also you might want to handle him at the petstore and inspect him.
There are no toher meds i can think of except if he is dehydrated squirt some water down into his mouth. Also a hot soak would help maybe.
