What type of Hognose is this? Also, what are the probing methods for this

frank k Nov 22, 2003 03:00 PM

type of animal for sexing. I have pythons and boas but got this animal as part of a liquidation of tanks and animals from a friend of a friend (good deal for me and I figured I could find out more details on the hognose from this forum). The animal has eaten frozen thawed fuzzies each week for the last month or so (maybe 5 meals, I can check the charts but they are downstairs in the snake room). It has also shed cleanly for me. I have had no trouble with the animal but when I look at all the posts for hognose snakes I haven't seen any that look like this little animal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Frank Kincade.

Whoever you bought the snake from might not have been as honest as you thought... too many dis-honest sellers in the market today =(

The only colubrids I work with are hognose... but to me that looks like some type of ratsnake?

I just looked at the pictures again, in a different browser (I normally use Netscape and the picture showed up really small for some reason?).

In IE I see somewhat of an upturned snout... I've only dealt with westerns personally, so I definitely don't have any grounds to answer your post definitively. In IE that snake looks like it could be a Madagascar hognose.

I appologize you any confusion I may have caused. In Netscape that photo was shown as big as a thumbnail...

Good luck with your new aquisition.

My guess is one of the madagascan races of hognose of the genus Leioheterodon (spelling?). I don't know much about the care of the exotic hognose, but a search should give you some info. Andy

You could try looking on www.hognose.com. There is lots of info about all species of hognoses there. As for sexing though
I sex snakes by the shape of the tail. the males have a broader and longer tail. the females have a shorter tail with more even of a taper. hognoses are really easy to sex this way. hope this helps.

Frank,
Looks like a malagasy blond hognose--leioheterodon modestus. Check out the post by venombill on 11-16, as well as the responses. Nice looking snake!
