do dead crix hold the same nutrients as live ones?

jsinger Jun 01, 2003 08:55 AM

i noticed this morning that a lot of the crix in my dwarfs enclosure died over night - toki is still eating them, so my question is is she still getting enough nutrients eating dusted dead crix, as supposed to live ones?

Jason-

You should now this! You should not leave crickets in the cages overnight. Crickets will chew on your chameleon, and cause nasty cricket bites. Live fresh gutloaded crickets are the only way to go. Dead crickets will not be the same, and they will dry out and not have any of the crickets juices. You will have problems if your chameleons are not eating all the crickets you put in the cage and are allowed to live in the cage. They will eat the chameleon feces and this can cause problems of its own. Hope this helps!

Jason,

Good on ya - they are in a container!!
Most chams will not eat dead crickets (as a rule), but if they are freshly dead, I suppose it would be okay.

We remove dead crickets from the containers daily... but crickets live for days in there if you give them some grated carrot - or a little fish flake food. If they get too hungry, they will even eat each other!! Yuck...

There is no way I can make sure all those tiny crix are eaten or just hanging out. I leave a bit of apple in there for them and the fruit flies. Can they (crix) be a problem for my little ones???

Lele,

I leave dry fish flakes in a sunken bottle cap (placed in a corner), this attracts the crickets and keeps them well fed. I leave a bit of baby food (fruit) too.... this will keep flies and crix away from the chams.

It has happened tho.. the crix ganging up on a brev - one that was shedding and at a disadvantage. So... the lesson here is to keep the crix fed.

I know that with my T (tarantula) the crix always need to be removed in pre/post molt for the same reason so it makes sense. I do keep apple/banana in there and if any are leftover crix it's only a few. Frankly I check the enclosure so often the crix wouldn't have a chance. Thanks again
