Fire Skinks

LNMS Nov 22, 2003 03:52 PM

I've been pondering the thought of acquiring (in the future) fire skinks with the intention of breeding them. I've had leopard geckos for, whow, it's been seven years, any way, I'm intrigued now with fire skinks. They are beautiful, interesting, moderately sized, diurnal, omnivoruous, and tunnelers, which I think is cool. Plus from an article I read they don't sound too difficult to breed, and buyers for captive bred beauties like these ought to be easy to find. My questions are 1. Seeing as how they seem willing to eat dog and cat food and plants, would they eat canned or freeze dried crickets? I'm sick of live crickets and I have now source for mealworms. 2. Any breeders out there to buy captive bred skinks from?

I've been working with them for a couple of years and breeding them for the past year. I find them very easy to deal with and, once you have an acclimated pair, breeding is simple.

As far as feeding, I wouldn't recommend a diet consisting primarily of dog or cat food. They are active, predatory animals by nature and I'm sure you'd wind up with health problems similar to other species that people have tried to maintain on dog/cat food. I've only offered it to mine on a few occasions and I find that they don't even touch it if there is any alternative.

They respond immediately to live prey and seem to ignore dead crix, so I don't think you would get much action from freeze dried or other inanimate prey. At any rate, I've found them to be very entertaining, sociable skinks to work with. The neos are stunning and very hardy. I plan to continue with them for some time yet.
