PAINTED TURTLES ARE TERRITORIAL?

HerpHelmz Nov 22, 2003 04:34 PM

I've had my male Painted Turtle for 5 years, he is most liely 6 or 7 years old. He is like 5 or 6 inches long. For 3 years that I had him he lived with an adult Female RES, I'd take it they became friends. They never fought or anything. But I gave away the RES last year. I have another little RES about half the size of my Painty. I put the RES in my Painty's tank, I came back like 2 minutes later to find my Painty chasing the RES around the tank snapping at it's neck. Are Painted Turtles territorial or does my Painty have a problem with RES?

Hey,

My turtles often bully newcomers as well. I guess they (especially males and big guys) can be territorial once they've lived in a place for long. Perhaps you can give them a bigger enclosure or hiding places so they won't be at each others' faces all the time. AFter a while, some turtles learn to get along. Otherwise, separate them to be safe--you don't want missing claws or ripped tails.
