First frogs...

mbmcewen Nov 22, 2003 05:35 PM

I got these today at a show in Atlanta, from Under The Canopy Farms. All of their frogs looked good, but they had all of their bloodlines mixed together in one tank...one tank per species of course. So I really don't know if I have seperate bloodlines. The lady said it was likely though. Anyway, I am very happy with them and can't wait to put them in the big tank. How long should I keep them in shoe boxes?

Thanks,

Matt

Nice, its up to you. Most people say about a month. I normally break down before that and move them. As long as they are all eating and your new tank it not huge they will do fine.

Its tough, after spending lot of time on a new nice home. When I got my first frogs I put them straight into the 20gal high. I watched them very closely, and I kept the food levels very high. I did lose one, but never was really sure why, but it was after a couple of months. The other 3 are still doing great in the same home, and I am hoping they breed soon. We will see....

Good luck, and watch your wallet, this gets addicting...

yes, I am already daydreaming. I have a question for you. I was looking at your tanks on your site...do you just lay the moss directly over the gravel? and it lives? and the plants, you just place them in the gravel and they do ok?

I think I may do that next time....false bottom just takes up to much vertical space

Yes my plants and moss grow well, have not had a problem. I have heard some plants will not grow in just gravel, but I have not had one yet.

nice looking frogs!..i wouldn't worry bout keeping them in a shoe box. when i got my first ones they were put right in the tank all eat well except one is a bit skinny but still chaces the fyies. i'd say just make sure you keep an eye on them to make sure they're eating good. how big is the tank for them?

good luck

thanks! The tank is a homemade roughly 40 gallons. I am going to wait a little while and make sure they hunt well. I put some pinheads in for them and one immediately started hunting. They are so fast, you can't see the tongue. My cham is nowhere near that fast...nowhere near that small either...

It is tough to do but I would keep them in shoeboxes until they are bigger. If you are like me you won't see them and start poking around trying to locate them and stressing them out more. When I got my auratus I kept them in their shoebox for over 2 months until I felt safe to add them.I did jump the gun some on my bicolors and lost one because of it.Auratus can be shy and will hide alot when they are froglets.Mine are Costa Ricans and now they aren't shy at all. They are over 16 months now and doing great.I took the advice from Patrick and it worked for me,good luck.

my azureus have been very bold and are always out and about looking for food. even from the first day i got them and put them straight in they've been bold enough to stay out. and now when i need to have my hand in the tank on occation to trim plants they don't move until i nudge them. it might just be that they're a bolder type to begin with though.
anyway.. good luck in what you decide to do.
