Tons of Questions..

Insideoutsider13 Nov 22, 2003 06:21 PM

I figured this would be the best place for me to learn as much as I can about uromastyx. What are the types of uromastyx that are found in the pet trade and what are the ones that do not grow very large? I was also wondering information about these species and prices, so if I was going to get one I would atleast have some clue of what I wanted. If anyone can give me this information and information on housing it would be greatly appreciated. They seem like great animals and something that would interest me so all information given is needed!

The "smallest" uro wouldbe around a foot long. The thing with these guys is they love to dig, and NEED a large enclosure. Minimum of 50 gallons or at least 3' long. They are great pets, and the most common are the Mali uromastyx. They run generally around $40 for a CB baby. You shoudl look into a CB one rather than a WC one i have 2 WC and one baby mali CB. Many people buy this type of lizard since they think it is easy...with the vegitarian diet however i feel they are harder to keep than a insect eating one. Really read back in the fourms on these guys and if you decide to choose one stick around on the fourm. Feel free to ask more!
Go to WWW.DeerFernFarms.com a GREAT site to learn about all the different breeds and care!
Say hi to my male Saharan 'Rico'

Definitely check out www.deerfernfarms.com and the archives here like Lauren suggested. Saharans like hers and mine are also relatively inexpensive, though captive bred ones seem to be harder to come by than Malis. However they are smaller usually than Malis, too. Ornates and Hardwickis are small, but they are much more expensive. Uros are great! Good choice!

What do you provide your uros to quench their desires to dig?

And I see in your Uro enclosure picture on your webpage that you have what appears to be a commerically-made hide. Do you and the uros like this hide and, if so, which brand is it?

They are always digging in the sand, i am thinking of trying the proexotics mis too however. I have the store bought hide which is good beacause it is enclosed on all sides and a rock hide, the cave under the basking area. they prefer the one under the basking area maybe beacause it is on the warm side, but they use both readily.
I forget the brand...i got it at petsmart however.
Good luck and thanks for stopping by the webpage.

insideoutsider13 Nov 23, 2003 06:33 PM

A single of these uros must still be kept in a size tank as mentioned before? A 55 min?

fruitionx Nov 23, 2003 07:15 PM

If you want a lizard that can be kept in a smaller tank but it somewhat similar to the uromastyx, somewhat not really tho maybe you should look at the xamagma taylorii (spelling???). They eat insects but can be housed in a much smaller tank. They have similar conditions to the uromastyx just are tiny. I BELIEVE around 3 inches or something. I have seen you around the Leopard Gecko fourm, so if you keep leos it wont be hard to feed these guys. Good luck! there are tons of lizards out there, pick which is best for you housing wise, temperment wise, conditions ETC.. i looked at TONS of different kinds before i decided to go with uromastyx. I can say from experience though, leos and uros are two totally different creatures personality wise. Feel free to email me with any questions! FruitionX@aol.com

Could you find a picture of the lizard that you just told me about? Or find its common name... it sounds like it would interest me a lot. I am into desert species but I do not have much room and thats the key.
