Newt ID-Help!

Triturus Nov 23, 2003 06:47 AM

I don't have the means of creating photos for my computer, so I'm just going to do a basic description if three young newts I was sold. The person who sold them to me claims they are alpine newts (Triturus alpestris), but they don't look like that species. The underbelly is orange, but they have an orange stripe running from the back of the head to the tip of the tail. The skin is rough and seems to have a kind of marbled appearence that resembles the skin of those black-and-green dart frogs: minty, greenish-blue mixed with dark gray/black patches. Are these young newts weird hyprids of somekind, or do T. alpestris normally look black and blue-green? (I'm not too familar with other Triturus sp.)

Do they look like any of the newts on this site: http://www.darkwave.org.uk/~caleb/triturus.html ?

And if not, how are they different?
How large are they?
