Hog Island Boa question...

junebug Nov 23, 2003 01:37 PM

Hello all,

I have a quick question about a hog island boa that I own. It is a cb male that is 7 months old. He was eating very good on f/t pinkies/hoppers until about a month ago. Now whenever I offer food he strikes at it but then lets go and he doesn't eat it. I have other snakes (colubrids) and I know that they eat a lot less this time of year (or completely go off feed) because of seasonal changes.

So my question is do hog island boas go through these same seasonal induced decreases in appetite even though where they are from is basically all one season? How worried should I be? Should I cool or hibernate even though I am not breeding him? He is not skinny looking and is relatively active, flicks his tongue, and he thermoregulates regularly.

My set up is a cool side around 70's and a warm side at 90 degrees. I have him in a 10 gallon with two hides and a water dish. I mist occasionally when it is dry.

Any help would be awesome,

thanks guys

Chris

Chris,
Your male hog is a little young to be going off feed. I would raise your cool side temp to 82F. Have you made any changes to his cage set up recently? Have you changed what and how you are feeding?
