AGE FOR BREEDING???

cv768 Nov 23, 2003 01:42 PM

How old would you say basilisks should be before being bred???

I've heard one and a half to two years...I've bred them once at two years but what is the best breeding age???

I'd think size would be more important then age, you could have a old enough female that may be a little slow on her growth and may not be able to handle the eggs. I haven't owned baslisk before, but for dragons a good size is usually 24" and a good age is usually 2 years - 3 years, sometimes less.

Upon (too) good feeding, some females, especially of B. vittatus, can produce eggs at 8-9 months. But this very often end sin eggboundness. I hence always recommend to raise females dryer and with less food between 9 and 15 months. Most basiliscs are ready to breed at 15 months, but at least for the females its safer to wait till they are at least 18 months old-if you wait till they are two, its even better.

Hope that helps

Ingo
