My response to an inquiry about niles

Arklier Nov 23, 2003 06:33 PM

I'm selling two of my ackies in the classifieds to make room for expanding my dart frog collection. In response to my ads, I received a question on if I had any baby niles. I thought that people might be interested in reading my reply, so here it is.

No, just the ackies. IMHO they make much better pets than niles. While it is more up front than a nile, they cost far less to house, and feed, and plus are far less hassle to handle. To put it in perspective, a full grown nile will eat more than enough food in one year to make up for the cost of both of my ackies. To say nothing about the large cages (or perhaps an entire room) that they require as adults. Also, most niles are nervous, mean, and untrustworthy even as adults if not given several hours of handling daily, and as they get to full size, they can do some real damage to you with their bites and tail whips. Most niles are also wild caught, and will require a get checkup or at least worming for parasites. I'm not putting down niles just to sell you my ackies. They are a large, potentially dangerous species that usually cannot be fully trusted, they require large amounts of food and a huge cage do do well. Think carefully about if you really want a nile. It requires a lot of responsibility, time, and money.
