Are These Harvester Ants?

Karu Jun 01, 2003 11:06 AM

These are the ants at that scrub area I was talking about. There are hundreds of piles of these ants all over that place. If these are the right ants, I would have an unlimited supply. I caught all these ants within like 5 mins. Please tell me these are the right ants.

Hi, Not sure if these are Harvester or Messor or ??? But my HL's eat something like this and like them very much. I would watch out for cats though. Ants

:Hello Karu. Yes, these appear to be the Harvester ants that HLs will eat. They appear to be from the genus Pogonomyrmex. Lester G. Milroy III

Yep, those look like P. badius. If they're harvesters, that's the species, since they're the only harvesters that live in Florida. Plus, notice that you have a few major workers in the mix (the ones with big heads). P. badius is the only North American harvester that has dimorphic workers. Your new HL should love them!
