Cricket bites?

bmulcahy Nov 23, 2003 07:45 PM

I was just giving my 4 1/2 beardie some baby food(post from 10 minutes ago) when I noticed a cut and swelling on one side of his mouth. Is it possible for crickets to hurt a beardie that way? Any suggestions on what to put on the cut? I know the best answer is a vet. However, I am a teacher would bought beardies and corn snakes for his classroom (4 of each)over the last year and I pay everything out of my pocket( my wife already wants a divorce because of my little friends and if she had any idea how much money I spend she would leave me) - no money from the school and I just can't afford to go to a vet right before Christmas. Any thought would be appreciated!

Yes crickets can bite and will chew on things including lizards. The best thing to do is only feed as much as the bearded can eat in a day. If there are a couple of loose crickets, leave some greens or fruit/vegetable in the tank for the crickets to eat (or remove the loose crickets).

If it's not too close to the mouth, put neosporin on it, without the pain reliever. But if it's too close where it might eat it, it might eat it and I'm not sure if it could make yur beardie sick. If you're afraid it will eat it, just follow the advice above, and watch it to make sure it doesn't get worse. If you see a lot of dirt and stuff on it, just get awet paper towel or something and lightly wipe it. Another thing you could do is put the neosporin on it, while your holding yur beardie, than wipe it off in like 5-10 seconds. It's not as good as leaving it on, but it's better than nothing. If it's on the side of the mouth, a little neosporin would be Ok, i think, because they lick in the front, not the sides. If near the mouth, r u sure it's a cricket? Your beardie might have veen tried chewing on wood or something and scratching its mouth. Good Luck.
