Question for Ingo or anyone else that can answer it about Tokays...

KristenM Nov 23, 2003 07:47 PM

Ok, I got a for sure female like a month and a half ago. I have noticed that she makes cooing sounds towards my male every night. She gets close to him and makes this noise is like a whimper almost. It sounds very submissive and I was wondering if its a mating thing or just communication!
Thanks
Kristen!!!

Typically tokays produce this sounds if they want to sit at a place, where another, personally known tokay is sitting. Very often you hear that if one animal ia approaching the place where the eggs are attached while the partner is sitting on top of the eggs.
So you may take it as a sign that there is already some relation or bonding between the two.
Foreign tokays are approached quickly, snarled at and sometimes bitten if they cover a place where another tokay wants to sit.

Hope that helps

AWESOME! I never heard my female tokay make a single sound. and I had her over 2 years now. she knows how to communicate with me though--I can tell when she wants to eat, that she waits on the glass and rubs her head against the glass in my presence. That means she wants me to feed her.

she sometimes comes toward me when i talk to her which is neat.

even when i pick her up she doesn't make a sound or do anything for that matter. well except lick me..so i stick out my tongue like I'm about to lick her but needless to say I won't

I wish i could hear mine make a sound at least once

Mine rubs his nose on the glass too when he wants to come out. I open the top and he climbs out onto my hand but not before he licks it like you said. Pretty awesome guys they are.

I like the sounds my hatchlings and juvies make. I hear them thru out the day and night. The adults dont make as much sounds but watchout when the male calls if your close by!

My male calls all the time and thats definitely not that sound! The female that I have is mature so its not a juvi call its a really neat sound! It sounds almost like a dogs whimper or whine.

I think that pretty much shatters the myth about tokays being untamable. It takes time, and you have to earn their trust, but it can be done! Even with wild captured specimens. Only because lizards are smart and can adapt to their environment, which includes human keepers
