Heating and lighting a rubbermaid

cold_blooded Jun 01, 2003 11:42 AM

HI! I am buying a huge, clear, underbed storage box by rubbermaid for my kingsnake. I have a few questions though, before i get it.

1) its only 10 inches high...is that too low?
2) How would I heat it....I was thinking of just using her human heating pad under neath, and puting spacers on the bottom
3) How would I light it.....I was thinking of just cutting out a large strip from the lid, and replacing it with mesh and putting the light there
4) would three rows of holes 2 inches apart, along the top of the container, PLUS the mesh where the light is, provide enough ventilation?

Thank you

having done some research into lidded vs. lidless (rack) box systems, I can tell you that the lids to underbed boxes are not secure enough for snakes without additional modification. The problem is that they only latch on the ends, leaving a lot of wiggle room in the middle. If you can lift the lid up in the middle without too much trouble, the snake will be able to get out easily. If you want to use an underbed box, you'll have to figure out how to secure the lid and still make it easy to get on and off--and I don't have any answers for that one!

10" height is fine for a king. You can use whatever UTH you've been using and that should be fine, too. I can't answer the ? about lighting, sorry.
