Chameleon in a Paludarium

ALH Nov 24, 2003 06:02 AM

Hi!

I'm planning to set up a paludarium (50/50 land/water), and I was wondering what species of chameleon will tolerate that type of environment. They can't be too big (15 cm/6" tops), and must be able to get back on land in case they fall into the water. It's also important that they're not too aggressive. I'm planning on having fish, mudskippers, gecko and maybe some crabs with the chameleon. Maybe also some anoles. I would greatly appreciate any help.

Even thought it sounds like a neat idea, this will probably not work for any species of cham. They don't tend to get along well in multi animal setups unless they are the size of a greenhouse. Most cham species are antisocial enough that they will suffer extreme stress. They are quite sensitive to airborne bacterias, parasites, and molds from habitats other than those they are native to (that the other residents bring with them), and the other creatures will either stress them visually during the day or disturb them at night. There can't be any visible lights on at night as chams have full color vision and they will keep them awake. Also, chams need a 10-15 degree temp drop at night that the other residents may not want. Sleeping chams often let themselves free fall off a branch if disturbed, so one falling into the water could drown at a time when it is cold and unable to rescue itself.
