UVB Lighting

RavonTUS Nov 24, 2003 07:14 AM

Greetings,

I have yet to purchase a UVB light for my RES. They seem quite expensive. I rushed into all my other turtle purchases just to keep him living and since he is still alive do you have any suggestion?

I saw this "combination" bulb and was wandering is anyone has used/tested it.

Greetings,

Well, maybe I've answered my own question. I found this web site that covers several different UVB lights. Check it out.

What did you decide on? I've been debating that coil bulb for when its time to change bulbs. I just got the bare necessaties when I set up my tank. Just wondering what others are doing

With a clamp lamp but also condisering the stand I saw on one site that holds the lamp.

Greetings,

I will probably go with a Mercury Vapor lamp.

From searching this site and others, the coil lamp seems to product enough UVB, but no heat. I really don't want two lights and I can't quite aford a hood and light purchase at the same time. It's $35.00 for the hood and another $35-40 for the bulb.

Where a mercury vapor lamp will provide both UBV and heat. My only concern about this lamp is the distance. Again from the reviews, it seems to produce more heat than a normal UVA light bulb, so I'm not sure how close or far away to put it. I've seent this type of bulb for $30-50.

Does anyone else out there use a Mercury Vapor Lamp??

Thanks!!! I've been wondering about that lamp but the price kind of scared me away. But taking a closer look and hearing recommendations makes me less weary of it. I've been thinking of getting one of the dome lamps and the stand for the lamp. Since I'm going to a rubbermaid container next, I'm very reluctant to get a clamp on lamp just in case it gets too hot. Plus, I have an issue with cats jumping up at the turtle tank (my cats no longer scare the turtle, as a matter of fact, he swims towards them now), I don't want any of my light fixtures falling into the tank because of a cat knocking it over.
