Sad news (Lady Belle is dead)

ecb Nov 24, 2003 09:56 AM

I found her corpse wedged up under the edge of the water dish
I have no idea how she got there
she did not look crushed, just in there, like she had been digging a burrow

I moved the 2 guys (maybe girls, who knows) to the big tank with Erowen. They look so small compaired to her. But I have to clean out the 30 tall hex, it smells BAD.

I had not seen her for 2 days, I couldnot imagine she could decompose so FAST
Must have been the crickets helping it along

I am sorry for both of you. I know how hard it is to lose these guys. That is why I don't sell my babies until they are 6 months old. I had a clutch of 9 that is now down to 5. I don't know what caused the deaths. The first was one who never seemed to eat from the start but the others have been one by one. They looked healthy and fat and were eating great but died anyway. I found one this morning half buried in the soil. He had been fat and green and active just 24 hours before.

Anyway, my best to you both, and my sympathy.

it is nothing that I did
She had been pretty elusive these last few weeks
the hardest to find
but all seemed to be eating (I can never be sure, they do not eat in front of me, or when i put the food in the tank)
they have food available all the time
but I seem to just be recyccling it, not replacing it
They have found eachother in Erowens tank, and they are keeping to the hot end, and she is keeping to the cool middle near the water
I M putting another food dish in there, one for smaller worms, and one for larger ones
and there are those crickets that seem to never get eaten, and I cannot catch them either
So they should all be ok
Right??

They should be alright. Have you tried mealworms for the smaller ones? I keep a bowl with a little chow and dusted mealworms for my babies and they seem to really enjoy them. I have started working with roaches too and find that if I drop in a small, 1/4", nymph they pounce on it. Of course I feed these from a dish and only feed non-glass climbing types like orange spot or orange heads. These are somewhat slow growing and long lived. They are too large as adults for even the adult MHDs but can be fed off at any stage just like crickets. They are easy to raise and require food that you likely have on hand. You may want to look into them as a consideration. Remember, variety!

actually I have young superworms that they eat sometimes
and I have taken to dropping some eathworms on the dirt in front of Erowen when she starts to get active in the AM (a few escape into the dirt, I M ok with that)
so I M planning on making the OLD food dish into the babies fod dish
Even Lady bell was not skinny when I found her body
and the babies I still have are near the same proportions (I cannot spell that word right) they were when I got them (just a little bit bigger)
and the "Nightcrawlers" I got online, are just wierd Redworms
and they are doing just fine in the trash can I have them in.
*I put the Superworm shells in there for food for them, They love them. and I just take another matching wastebasket and put it over the top, turn them both upside down to dump the dirt into the other every 10-20 days or so [so the worms will migrate some] and they are not dying, they are actually breeding.*
