Ok bottom line I stuck my hand in the cage thismorning and Both my S. Aligator Lizards rased there heads with there mouths opend and started hissing at me. One even lunged for me mouth wide opend when my finger got to close. I was sure the smaller of the 2 "about 10-12" including tail" was the female but recently I have noticed the larger one taking on a lot of weight and I am startign to think this might be the female and posably pregnate. Can anyone help me with hoe to sex them without losing a finger? Also how can you tell if they are expecting? Thanks a million time to watch the croc hunter LOL

Males have a much wider head. It will appear very triangular and set off from the neck while a female's head won't be set off much from the neck giving her a much more stream lined appearance. This is only visible in mature males, however. If you really want to know, there are some other things you can try. If you recently collected them, a recently mated female often bears grayish scars in the shape of bite marks on the underside of her tail and chin where the male bit her while courting and mating. Another thing you can do (you're going to have to be brave) is get them really pissed (chase them around the tank) then grab them so they can't bite you, but can still twist around. This will usually cause the lizard to poop all over you and in the process many males will evert a hemipenis.

By the way, with persistant gentle handling even the most aggressive alligator lizard will become dog tame
