Powersun bulbs and screen covers

JLJ2018 Nov 24, 2003 11:52 AM

I just got my first powersun and it says not to let it come in contact with screen covers due to high heat. I thought this wasn't a problem with today's reptile screen covers. Do I need to suspend it above the cover?

The easiest solution is to buy a 10" clamp lamp. Not the ones from petsmart (I forgot the brand on them). The other brand of clamp lamps fit a mercvapor bulb very yell and they are not in contact with the screen.

Question: wouldn't it depend on the wattage of the bulb? I have a 75 wt. bulb in a ceramic housing, and it sits on the screen, no problems. My tank is also kinda' tall, so I don't worry about Draconis touching it.

Merc Vapors are longer than standard bulbs. Merc Vapor in a standar 8" clamp lamp a merc vapor actually sticks out of them.

I also questioned that when I got my PowerSun. I use a Reptilamp stand. Works pretty well, I can adjust the heat in the cage by just changing the height of the lamp stand. I got it at www.herpsupplies.com, I think it was like 15 bucks, you can get them at pet stores also. As long as your ceramic dome fixture has a hanger, you can hand it from the lamp stand.

That's what I wound up doing...stealing my lamp stand from my silkworms and moving it to this powersun. Seems to be working great.

Herpsupplies.com also has a 10-inch dome for sale. I think that is even deep enough for the 160-watt Powersun.
