What software???

heartmountain Nov 24, 2003 02:13 PM

Does anybody here use any of the herp tracking software's out there. I have found 3 so far that look interesting ( Just Reptiles, Hungry Herps, and MSA Herps) but don't want to spend the $$ to find out later that there is a better one. I would like it to be flexible enough that I can track a variety of things. So what program do you guys use, and are you happy with it? Is there anything else that you wish it did that it doesn't, and have you seen that offered on a different program? Any info would be helpful.

Thanks
Sean

I have tried all those programs and even developed my own MS Access database for my snakes, but in the end, I simply use an Excel spreadsheet to keep my snake data. It is simple, easy to use, and I can record the things that I need to know.

Of course, I have 30+ snakes to keep track of. Maybe these other programs would work for fewer animals, but with a bunch of critters, I find simple spreadsheets more useful.

So I keep my data like this -

and I can produce output like this -

I agree most of the tracking software is not great for large numbers of snakes. I have 80 and use an excel spreadsheet. Once you get I like you want it, it is easy to use and can be changed and adapted to different situation.

I used Hungry Herps, but found out it will not work well on a network so I had to scrap it. I have 150 herps, and I now use an MS Access database put together by a volunteer. It's NICE. Although it took a while to get HH up to speed with my collection, some of the forms are awkward and some of the colors are hideous. I didn't get the measurement form where you can enter in distances such as eye to nostril, and between eyes, I don't know someone could practically use that info. But if service means anything to you, the guy that runs the company called me on THANKSGIVING DAY and talked to me for an hour! You CAN'T beat that. HH might be good for you if you aren't that good.
