Ball Python with Dented Eye

Booger Nov 24, 2003 03:54 PM

My Ball just shed last night. He had a great shed and seems perfectly hydrated and fat, but one of his eyes are dented in somewhat. He can still move it because I saw him do it. I checked the skin to make sure an eye lens wasn't still stuck to the eye, but both of them were attached to the shed skin. I've owned a lot of snakes and have never seen this before. What is causing it and what should I do?

that could be the cause although it sounds unlikely if he had a perfect shed??

hopefully someone else has a better idea!

hmmmmmmmmmmmm i just don't know then
you say he's got water and the hummidity is around 55-60 he should be fine

maybe he just hasn't been drinking water lately i'm sure its nothing to worry about

That's not it either. The humidity is high (but I don't know exactly). It's the strangest thing. This has never happened to me before. The center of the eye and radiating outward somewhat, the eye is dented where the other is perfectly round, just the way it should be.

it might very well be a small piece of skin. if youdont know for sure take it to a vet that deals with exotic snakes.

I've got a '99 male, the individual is comparitavely "bug-eyed" and has been since he was a hatchling. We kept him in an elaborately decorated vivariam where he would try to climb up the sides, slide down, and bash into the sides, bottom, decorations, or whatever. His eye-caps would end up dented. As you said, it does not impair the ability to move the eyes or accurately strike at prey. Every time he shed, his eyes would be perfect again. Finally moved him into a rack system, so this doesn't happen anymore. Might have happened to yours right after it shed, maybe the new cap was a little soft and the snake hit his eye on something. Hope this helps.

Thanks Paul. That sounds a lot more probable. I'll just wait to see what happens with the next shed unless it abcesses or something (God forbid).
