Newbie lookin' for some advice...

WingedPoe Jun 01, 2003 12:22 PM

After finally reaching a point in my life where I can provid the proper care, time, and money into a large lizard I am now exploring my options. I have been researching monitors for some time now, but after reading some liturature I think a tegu would be more my style. I was wondering if you guys could help me by sudjesting some good breeders and sharing stories of these beautiful creatures? Thank you so much for your time!

If you can provide sufficient space and lots of food a Tegu is a wonderful choice. I will admit I enjoy interacting more with my Tegus than I do with my monitors. Ron St. Pierre should have Tegus hatching over the next couple of months. Bert has great Tegus also. Both breeders provide terrific customer service and I'm sure you'd be equally satisfied if you purchased from either. Best of luck with your new adventure!

So what are your tegus like? do you let them wander around the house and how do you keep their encloser moist enough? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions ^-^ but they best way to find out is to ask someone who knows

Hey there newbie- I must say, I am a bit of a newbie myself. That's great that you have decided to check out Tegu's, from what I have seen and heard so far they are really great lizards. I can't wait to see pic.s if you do end up getting one~ best of luck!

I have my cage open to my living room so they can wander out if they want to. They usually like to stay in their cage but they come out to hunt when they get hungry. Sometimes I'll let them hunt around for awhile before I feed them purely for entertainment. They always put themselves back. For moisture I have a buried rubber maid storage tub 3/4 full of damp peat moss.
