Ok, Can you buy those 'cricket crystals' at the local hobby/craft store?

SaveFerris Nov 24, 2003 04:26 PM

Wormman calls it "Anionic Polyacrylamide"

"Cricket Crystals are made of a safe product called Anionic Polyacrylamide, which is the same stuff used to make the cricket water type products in pet stores.  We are selling you the dry crystals for making your own chucky cricket water.  You can make if for your own insects, or for resale. Totally Safe for humans to touch!"

I heard somewhere that its sold at hobby/craft stores? Where should i look for it? Is it used in candle making? Soap making? I have no clue!

Thanks!

in other words your crickets are eating plastic which is a petroleum based, not naturally occuring substance - I wouldn;t want it in Luna's tummy. There have been debates about this in the past. A better alternative is to make your own with agar which you can get at a health food store or order it online cheaply. www.pennherb.com/cgi-bin/herbstore.cgi

here's a recipe - easy! there is also a link to the USDA nutritional content of agar

Does this 'agar' resist mold?

I cant use jello because it just attracts mold and breaks down into messy goo.

Lele;
I understand your concerns about allowing crickets to eat an artificial substance which may (or may not) have a long term effect on the health of your chameleon. Although I haven't heard of any studies on the effects of crickets consuming this polymeracrylic then being eaten by a chameleon, it stands to reason that the consumption of any artificial substance could be harmful in the long run.
I will try the agar agar. About how long will a batch last, BTW?
