Big Apple Thermostat

Martyh2133 Nov 24, 2003 04:35 PM

I am looking at using the big apple proportional thermostat. And I was wondering of those that have used them, how many cages or heat pads have you or do you use with this thermostat? I am looking at the Ultratherm heat pads from the bean farm. I am going to use all this on three 8'x 2'x 2'. Any help that you could give me would be great. I am making them out of 3/4" MDF which I will laminate to water proof. Thanks again.

Hi,
I just got a couple of their thermostats and I really think that for $25 more, the Helix DBS 1000 is far & away the better thermostat. First, on the DBS1000, there is a digital read out, which is extremely nice. On the Big Apple, there is just a dial. The DBS 1000 handles up to 500 watts, the B. A., only 300. Plus the night time drop feature is sooooooo much better on the DBS 1000 (more money but...what will you remember about the little bit of extra money 5 years from now). With the B.A. all you get is this funky little dial thing at the bottom that is not calibrated so you really don't know what your setting it at until you take an independant reading. I do believe the night time drop feature on the B.A. is extra $ too BTW.
Go with the DBS 1000 & you will not be sorry.
