Can tums be used as a calcium supplement?

leopardgex15 Jun 01, 2003 12:29 PM

"Calcium supplements - The best way to provide extra calcium is by using Calcium Carbonate. It can be found in tablet or powder form in most pharmacies. If you can't find it, you may have to ask the pharmacist for it. Another popular source for calcium supplementation is using crushed Tums™ tablets which can be purchased almost anywhere."
"In addition to the base diet one fruit flavored Tums should be crushed up and sprinkled over greens at least once a week. The Tums helps to provide needed calcium. With Iguanas it is best to avoid calcium supplements containing vitamin D3 as it may accumulate in the body, causing vitamin D3 overdose."

Someone fowarded all that to men I was just wondering if the use of "Tums" is a bad idea, not that I am going to try it if it is anyway.

From what I've read, Tums can be used if you run out of your regular supplement, short-term, but shouldn't be used all the time. Hope that helps, and hopefully someone else can shed a little more light on the subject for you.

To dust crickets and mealies for leos you need a very fine poder for it to stick, it's not like lettuce for iguanas. You could try offering some in a dish if you're out of powdered, but with internet mail-order these days there is no reason why you should be unable to find powdered supplement no matter where you live.

Yeah I don't use it I use repto-cal. I can drive 5 minutes and pick up vitamins if I run out no problem.
