dumerils boa

redtailboa1 Nov 24, 2003 05:30 PM

I have a yearling boa that i got last year(infact almost exactly one year ago). I first put it in with aspen shavings and it would always burrow(like they should). The problem with the aspen is that it sucked the humidity out of the cage so i switched to orchid bark(the smallest chips i could find) and it hasn't burrowed since. Any advice?

Mix the two substrates together. It will give a nice leaf litter look and should fluff the bark up a bit to make it easier to burrow in. They will disappear into the mix; it seems very natural given their color/ pattern. I used to use this mix with my Dumeril's, but now I just use cypress mulch (I actually like the mix better).

oh you mean mix the orchid bark and aspent shaving together...hm sounds like a good idea. Thanks. Oh and one more thing. I just want to make sure it is normal for my boa not to eat prekilled food. She will eat alive(or twitching)food but even if i dangle it in front of her, she wont rat. Thanks guys

Exactly, I used about 40%shavings to 60% bark.

I have almost always been able to get my Dumeril's on F/T, including neonates. Be patient. My adult male has to have his F/T rats served on a dish. Give it time, and make sure it feels secure. Most of all, let it get hungry. Hungry snakes are less picky. Keep trying. Leave it in there overnight.
