When to start breeding?

Kevin_T Jun 01, 2003 12:40 PM

I have 1.1 Bolivian boas and i was going to try my hand at breeding this season. Is it best to start in early fall or could i put the two together now?

Thanks a bunch,

Kev

...you didn't give age or weight but you can breed boas anytime depending upon how you manipulate the environmental temps. When I was breeding boas ('92-'99) I cooled Dec-Jan and bred March-May. If they're ready now as far as weight goes then they'll be all the better next breeding season with an extra year on the female. I never bred a female less than 4 years old, usually at least 5 years old. Good things come to those who wait!!

The female is CB June of '98 and just shy of 6' long. The male is CB '00 and just shy of 4'. I was under the impression most people put their boas together in the fall, and i have read that cooling isnt always necessary? Do you recommend that i cool them because they are Bolivians or does this apply to all boa ssp.?

....Many people do breed in the fall but here in the Midwest I think most of us cool in Nov-Jan. Cooling isn't absolutely necessary but it helps synchronize the sexes, and I always cooled into the low 70's for about 6 weeks and even let temps hit 68-69 the last 2 weeks. I usually tried to cool Argentines a little more than Surinams and Guyanas by keeping them in lower cages, and I also made efforts to reduce their photolumens by covering about 90% of the glass with kraft paper. I would do the same thing with amarali but I never got around to breeding mine.
