Ball Python didn't eat prekilled rat, what should I do with it?

Luckiefool420 Nov 24, 2003 06:41 PM

Try to feed my snake but it didn't take it. Right now I left it in her cage to see if she might take it down later. how long should I leave it in there? Also can I freeze it and try later or do I have to just throw it away? She is only about 6-8 months old and 375 grams, will she still go off feed?

A couple of questions:

Has your ball previously eaten PK rats?
Has your ball eaten on a regular cycle?

Two suggestions if the previous answers are YES
*Remove the ball from all other distractions (possibly put it in a small box) - wiggle the rat in front of it's face (with tongs not fingers!)
*If that fails try placinig the rat and the ball in a brown paper bag overnight

If the first is NO:
*Just go with live prey

If the second is NO:
*I'm not sure... never had my balls go off-feed. Hopefully someone else can help you with that. I'd say try a live rat or maybe try again in a week?

This is the trhird time i have done prekilled. The first two went fine, the first was with mice and the second was with a small rat. I have already done the box and tong thing. Also, did i make to big of a jump going from two adult mice to a small rat? it was double the weight of the mice. I just felt like I was not feeding her enough.

I have a 600 g female who goes off feed around this time...this is only her second winter, but still last year she only ate 1-2 mice a month! Very frustrating when you feed F/T mice! This time she is eating about 1 small rat every 2-3 weeks...so a bit better, but it doesn't mean something is wrong with your snake just because it didnt take your rat....try again next week!

Ahhh!

It seems that you have just switched to the rat and the ball isn't taking it! They are famous for that... try a small rat pup (live) and see if you get better results...

heck, be creative - get a PK Mouse and PK rat and rub the two together so the rat has the mouse scent on it.

Good luck though, I am not sure what to do in this situation

If her last meal was double the size of the first 2 then she may not be hungry. What is your feeding schedule?Usually one good sized meal every 7-10 days is sufficient even for a small one.I feed all of my babies every 7 days at the same time an appropriate sized meal and they are growing fine.Hope that helps.Regards Bill McLeod

This is the season for it, but even if it just doesn't feel like eating it this time, freeze it, and try again in a week.
