about Rhabdias and my Spilotes eggs PIC

Ruggero Jun 01, 2003 01:18 PM

I've seen again Rhabdias eggs in the feaces, but this time the larvae were moving inside the eggs: awful !
I've then decided to use Ivomec, 0,2 mg/kg per os: now it's 10 hours from the dosing, and no side effects have appeared...
...I hope, and if this therapy works without side effects, we all will know that ivermectin is sure for Spilotes.

The good eggs are three: three were slugs.

Hi there,
I hope that you get your parasite problems under control.

Those eggs look amazing! I hope to produce some myself, one day. Good luck with them.
What incubation temperature are you using?

Cheers!

Incubation temp. are the same I've used with all my other colubrids: 28-29 °C.
The Spilotes with worms had no side effects with Ivomec per os: only it's a little more active, but it can be unrelated to treatment. Ivermectin is safe.
For the Spilotes with coccidia I've tried Clazuril at the slightly higher dosage of 10 mg/kg. But if it fails, I will buy (80 Euro, sigh!) Baycox-Toltrazuril 5%, and I will give 25mg/kg weekly for three weeks. The same therapy used successfully to treat coccidia in prey birds.

Did you treat the female with Ivermectin while she was gravid and do you think this poses any risk to the developing embryos?
Congrats on the eggs!

No !
The female which laid eggs is healthy.
I've 7 Spilotes, and now only 3 of these have parasites.
It's interesting that the Spilotes harbouring coccidia are asimptomatic: except the fact that the big male with Eimeria (Coccidia) sometimes laid blood stripes from its vent.
But also other two Spilotes of mine left a little blood from
the vent, but no coccidia were present !
Anyway coccidia pose a threath for the other animals, even if the carrier is apparently healthy, and it is wise to eradicate them, if possible.
