110 year old Crotalus atrox

wbrown Nov 24, 2003 10:40 PM

Just thought the readers of this forum would enjoy seeing a bit of rattlesnake history. This is an authentic (not a reproduction) 110 year old print depicting a Crotalus atrox. This beautiful piece was created by the artist J.H. Richards and printed in 1893. He also created a number of other rattlesnake species in this same series of historic prints. I hope you enjoyed seeing this one.

Those are terrific! Thanks very much. Are they from Baird's stuff from that time period?

I enjoyed seeing the timely "Crotalus lucifer" for the viridis. What great stuff indeed.

Yes, these originally appeared in Baird. Stejneger used these rattlesnake plates in his 1893 work which are the ones I have in my gallery. If you haven't seen the rest, the others are worth checking out.

Thanks for both of your responses and I enjoyed your website very much as well.

Ooh, I wish they would have kept that name! It goes so well with the evocative 'atrox' and 'durissus' and such. One thing I always liked about rattlers was the interesting scientific names they elicited.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?
