blind gecko

kg Nov 24, 2003 10:59 PM

This is Dexie, my blind gecko. She's a nice little girl, got her for free in a group I purchased. She was born with messed up eyelids that restrict her view...so I guess she's not completely blind. I handfeed her crickets and she gobbles them up like there's no tomorrow. Anyways, just wanted to share my handicapped little gecko.

Dexie is a pretty girl. You said you hand feed her crickets - does she react to their movement? How did you discover that she's blind? There have been a few posts lately about blind hatchlings or juveniles, its really nice to see such a sweet looking leo that's doing so well. Please post more details!

I'll bet she can see more than you think she can. I have seen several geckos like this and they all hunt just fine. A friend gave me three with messed up eyes (two have very reduced eyes) and I hatched out one with a reduced eye. They all are able to catch food just fine. Frankenstien, the one I hatched, waves his head around a tad when catching food, which leads me to beleive that he can't see well out of the one eye but he is the fattest gecko I have.

BTW, the messed up eyes is due to either incubating too high or a large flucuation in temps during incubation.

She was offered to me in a group of breeders and the seller informed me ahead of time that she was blind. She refuses to eat any type of worms...she will only eat crickets. I poke her mouth with a cricket, she licks it, opens her mouth and gently take it from me. She can probably see a little, because she will eat a couple crickets if I pinched off their legs and put them in a bowl. She's nervous when I hold her and sometimes tries to walk off my hand and into thin air. She also bumps into and falls off of objects a lot, so I keep her in a small, simple set-up with a hide and a water bowl. Unfortunately, I have to adopt her out because I have absolutely no room right now. I'm making sure she'll go to a really great home though, where she'll have more attention paid to her. All in all she's a really nice little girl and I'll miss her.

She's beautiful..

I would say that it's a sin for her to be born that way, but in a way she's the luckiest leo in the world. She has tons of one-on-one time with you and is well fed. You can tell she's very well cared for. Good work! Keep us posted!
