Frequent Defecation

Iblis Nov 25, 2003 12:42 AM

Everyone has to be a newbie some time. It's my turn now.

I bought 2 albino corn snake hatchlings. Both are feeding well on pinkies, which they get once a week.

But they poop almost every day, and it has a strong, unpleasant odor. It also appears liquidy.

Wouldn't worry about it at all, but my boa (common constrictor) poops once a week and it doesn't smell that bad. Am worried the corns might have come with a parasite payload. Worth checking?

BTW, I'm going to the IRBA show Dec 14 in Pomona, CA. Would love to add to my collection, especially more boas. Is there anything or anyone in particular at the show that I should be looking at?

Thanks!

It's always good to do a fecal if you suspect a problem, and they are relatively inexpensive, BUT...Corn snakes poop more often and less "firmly" than the larger Boas or Pythons. I started with BP's and when I got my corn, I thought it was having digestive issues, too. They just poop more often, and the consistency is looser. Hope that helps.

If it smells real bad it's parasites.I would have fecals done on both of them.Wash your hands well before you pick up your boa.If you know how you can buy panacure and ivermectine at any farm store and treat them yourself.LLL reptile sells panacure and tells you how to use it correctly....Good Luck...Paul

I've used the vet before with reptiles and had good results, so I'm inclined to think he got it right.

No poultry, just pinkies.
