Ground snakes....

Dragon_Lord Jun 01, 2003 01:47 PM

Does anyone here know anything about the ground snakes of Arizona? Mainly the species sonora semiannulata. I have been looking for someone who sells these gorgeous little snakes. But so far I haven't found anyone at all who sells or even keeps this species. As pretty as these snakes are its a wonder why they are not much more popular. I know they are nocturnal, eat crickets, and borrow, but what about their needs in captivity and breeding. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

you have to realize most people do not want to take the time with snakes that are insectivorus. Ringnecks, browns, rough earths, snakes of the genus tantilla, sonora, and other small insectivores are mostly used as feeders. I keep ringnecks, browns, rough earths, ect. and have found they make fair captives if you can get them to eat. The trick with small insectivores is to find something that they will eat. Some refuse to eat at all. I believe someone posted a ground snake on the beginner or general snake forum. Check with them for some of the specifics. One other thing I have heard about why they are not kept is that some won't accept things like crickets and must be fed spiders or such. Andy

I have 4 of the crossbanded ground snakes which are wc. I was lucky I guess cause all mine have been eating crickets great. I plan on breeding them next year but I can't seem to find much info on their breeding in the wild or in captivity. Do you keep yours in groups,I am not sure what sex they are either as they are still quite small. Don't the males have longer tails than females? O by the way what do you use them for feeders for, Kingsnakes or something? Why not just use rodents?

Most likey used to feed corals. That's the first snake that comes to mind when I think snake eater that is difficult to get switched over to anything but reptiles. Not sure making the switch would be a good idea anyway. If a snake is designed to feed on lizards & snakes, a rodent diet couldn't be all that good for the animal.

I haven't heard any info on breeding but i do believe that Glades Herp carries them from time to time.
