Interesting hibernation idea...what do you think?

4everherpn Nov 25, 2003 12:59 AM

I have posted on here about RES hibernation. I have a baby RES that I want to hibernate. I have a little fridge used for dorm rooms. I was thinking of setting it at its warmest setting and letting the RES brumate in there for the winter. What do you think about that? I mean the water would not freeze, but it would be cold enough for the RES to go into a deep hibernation.

I don't know the first thing about brumating turtles, but I do know I'm going to have live snakes sleeping in my fridge by tomorrow. So it's not completely in left field. I wonder about those little fridges holding a steady temp, though. I'd do some testing with a thermometer first.
I'm also worrying about 50 degrees being too warm for the milk, but I'll live.

Will they have enough air in there?

I guess I will have to open the fridge daily to let some air in.

That's what you do for snakes... planning on hibernating the greyband the same way? Kind of makes me nervous too, but I just bought some snakes that HAVE to be hibernated, so no choice in my case.
