Nice Surprise!!!!!

jt3119 Nov 25, 2003 01:10 AM

O.K. this is what happened.
In Aug I purchased(from different breeders)1.3 colony, beautifull! I was told I didn't have anything to worry about breeding unless I coo, them down. They were wrong! Saturday I found two eggs in the humid hide, and the other two Geckos are gravid as well!!!
I just thought they were fattening up from my feeding them, I wasnt aware that they were gravid, I am overjoyed!!!
What I'm wondering is would it be ok to incubate the eggs in a separate container in their home? The temp is maintained, and there is no worry of them getting into the eggs. has anyone ever tried this?

I've heard of people incubating that way. It can be a little tricky keeping the humidity right, and if the box gets tipped over that's not good at all, but it can work. Alternately, you can put the box on top of the refrigerator or on a high shelf in your house. You can't be too invested in all the eggs hatching, but there's no guarantee regardless and leopard gecko eggs are pretty hardy (relatively speaking).

Keep feeding those females well, looks like they're going to need it!

I just keep my eggs on a high shelf. It works great to produce females, at least here in Arizona. Try to choose a room/closet that is in the middle of your house/apartment. This will keep the temperature fluctuations to a minimum.

yay! now I know that I don't need to finish off my money when my female lays her eggs! she is extrememly gravid, and I didn't want to have to borrow money from my parents, but now I don't have to worry, since I am in AZ

Just to clarify - you may not have as high a hatch rate as you would under more controlled circumstances (ie incubator). Hovabators (model 1602 if I remember right) are about $40 if you shop around.

I thought only crested's eggs could be done on shelves.. That's.. weird. Even on top of a refridgorator? Geez.. I never even knew, lol.
