What sex are these day geckos?

juliecwuk Nov 25, 2003 05:33 AM

Hi,

I have posted this before on the old forum, but just wondered if any of you guys may be able to tell me what sex the day gecko on the right is? I am 100% sure that the one on the left of the photo is female. They are separated now but i would like to get a mate for the one on the right - but need to make sure it is the correct sex!

Please give me some idea ASAP!

Thanks

Juliecwuk

Not 100% sure form this Pic-but the animal on the right very much looks like a female to me...about 98% sure.

If the animal is older than 18 months its 100% SURE

in this photo they are approx 1 year 2 months, they are now 1 year 8 months. I was told that they were male and female, i have separated them and put the known female (on the left) in with my other male. However, i dont know about the other one and i really want to get a mate for it but this one seems difficult to sex, i keep getting different answers!

So then stick to my answer
I am breeding P. mad. grnadis since 1984 and I think I can say I know these animals very well.
And I still say female

Hi,

Could anyone post some photos of their day gecko (from underneath!) to show me pictures of known sex animals. I have been searching on the internet for days and i cant seem to find any decent photos of day geckos (showing their femoral pores). It would probably help me make my mind up about the sex of mine!

Thanks
Julie

Julie,
Your picture is a little blurry trying to sex the one on the right. If you look for the row of femoral pores that run across the underside of each leg, the males' are much more pronounced...with age, they darken and become raised.
Secondarily, if the grandis are the same age, look at how pronounced the chalk sacs are on the one on the left. Does the "male" show the same? Females develop these for egg production; males do not.

If you are really interested in these lines of gecko, I strongly recomend the new book by Leapin Lizards (daygecko.com). Its great.

Thanks for being helpful! I have purchased the book by the leaping lizards people (sorry i have forgotten their names!), i have recieved it in the post this morning, it took a while to arrive as i live in the UK. I have contacted various breeders and i now have 99% of people saying male. This is what i thought due to the calcium sacs but the more people i get to agree with me the more convinced i am!

Thanks so much everyone!

Julie
