Thermostat Probe Placement Question

jrphd Nov 25, 2003 09:26 AM

Might be a silly question, but say I have a snake that is primarily terrestrial and requires a temp of 85. Using a Helix or Big Apple or whatever, would the probe sit in the substrate or would it be taped to the back of the cage to measure ambient air? And what if you want a basking spot of say 95; would you then keep the probe in the basking spot and set the thermostat for that temp? Perhaps I'm making this more complicated than it really needs to be.
Thanks though
Jon

If you want a basking spot of 95 at a certain place in the enclosure, place your probe there.

Place the probe in the spot you want the warmest and set the thermostat to that temp. I usually do this and then place a cheap $10 digital thermometer somewhere in the cage. The one I use is from k-mart and has a probe so it is easy to move and check temps in other locations, plus this double checks the thermostat is maintaining the correct temp.
