suggestions for thernostat and timer combination or all in one?

stevkar Nov 25, 2003 09:26 AM

Okay I am new (returnee) to this... kept herps as kid, and now setting up for Beardies with my kid (wife is allergic to anything with fur)... going all out with 6x2x2 tank; 2 x 60 active UVB (the high UVB output externally ballasted MVB), AND Reptisun 5 or equivalnetn flurorescent, AND ProHeat radiant heat panel for heat control (since others only on/off, not adjustable).

My question: Is there a preferred combination (all in one, or combo of two) thermostat (for temp control) and timer (for day/night) light control...?

Any siggestions.

Thansk in advance.

-Steve

My sugesstion would be to go with one merc vapor, those 60 watt ones won't put off much heat the reptisun 5 bulb and then you could add a halogen bulb for heat. probably a 50 or 90 watt one depending on the size. Right now home depot is seeling nice outdoor timers. They have a nice 6 plug block on them. For temp control I would buy a rheostat ($20) it allows you to turn a dial to adjust the heat out put. Plug just the halogen bulb into it. Plug the merc vapor into the timer and the reptisun into the timer. The other option is a thermostat (alife from big apple is a nice inexpensive one), but then the halogen will be goin on and off all day. I do not personally think the heat panel is that great of an idea and they are expensive. A holgen bulb with the merc vapor right along side is a better idea in my opinion.
