Frog Farms?

spycspider Nov 25, 2003 09:54 AM

Hi,

Just curious. The bullfrogs or pigfrogs I see in markets (mostly Chinatowns) all look very plump and meaty (HUGE legs). Most of them are kept in huge piles all over each other and many have bruises, not to mention being swallowed by bigger ones. Does anyone have a clue where these guys are being collected? I doubt there are bullfrog farms since they're so common in many parts of the US...plus, takes them years to grow that big.

Awhile back, I found this site about a bullfrog farm in Louisiana. I think it was bullfrogs-louisiana. com or something along that line. But I think that they are more along the lines of breeding bullfrogs for use as pets, not food.
I guess that the big bullfrog farms somehow train the frogs to eat non-live food pellets by moving them around in a tray, or something like that.
But it is sad that, from what you said, the frogs are kept in such bad conditions at the markets. Any livestock should not have to be subject to starvation and cannibalism on the way to human dinner plates. I am in now way against eating meat, but the crowded conditions upset me.

Actually a lot of bullfrogs will eat anything. They can learn pretty quick what is food and what isn't. I know of toads coming out of peoples' yards to eat cat food out of bowls, so it isn't that much different. They are bullfrog farms everywhere. I know they have them in other countries and there are a few in the U.S. And personally, I love frog legs. lol. Good way to get rid of those damn bullfrogs over in the West eating all the native species. Andy

Hahahhahahh bullfrog legs ARE pretty good....though I'd never wanna see someone hack a frog to prepare it. =P

Cool info.

It's actually hideous how bullfrogs are prepared--they are harpooned alive (impaled) because they are slippery, and then their legs wacked off--probably while the frog is still alive.
So the frog suffered not a little, but a great deal, and is tortured for the purpose of a few bites of meat.

Considering people on here are frog advocates, I find it appalling that people eat them.

Considering I have pet bullfrog, it's even more appalling to me.

So stop this talk about eating frogs please

Honestly, I don't see what the problem is. I love alligator, snake, frog, and just about every other meat I've tried. I love dove, yet I work at a wildlife rehab center. It is the food chain. Get over it. Besides, in most places bullfrogs are pests anyway, so frog legs just gives people an excuse to cut back on invasive species. No one forces you to read the posts either. If you see something about eating frogs, then don't read any further. And I hope you are a vegetarian. Those cute little cows and pigs and what not don't suffer any less probably. Andy

Having pet bullfrogs, I'm attached to them. Such talk as eating frogs is revolting in a forum that frog lovers read.

This is no different than posting a receipe or proclaiming how much a person enjoys eating dog or cat, which some countries DO, and don't think anything about it. I've seen film clips of restaurants having kitty cats in little cages, knock them over the head with a club, then throw them in boiling water to be skinned--some of the cats are still alive after being hit over the head and thrown in boiling water.

Frogs are harpooned alive, then their legs either torn off or cut while the frog is still breathing. *I cannot imagine doing this to a pet*.

I find it strange how you can enjoy eating frog legs yet keep them as pets, and think nothing about eating frog legs. To me that's the same as keeping pet cats yet enjoy eating cat meat, at least that's what I feel.

I do not keep cows for pets. If I did, I would not be able to eat beef. Cows are at least put to death quickly. Frogs aren't. They are tortured beyond description (harpooned alive and limbs ripped from their body while still alive).

And yes-I eat very little meat, and most of the hamburger/ground beef I eat are made of tofu.

Well, as I said before, if you don't like it, don't read it. And how do you know the frogs I eat are not killed quickly? I am not saying I know either, but honestly, they are raised just like any other animal for feed so I could care less. I like the taste of frog and just because you do not agree with my opinion doesn't mean that I have to stop. Not like a bullfrog being eaten by a gator is any less painful.

Hey,

Sorry if you found the topic distasteful, but like Andy said, you didn't have to read or continue reading it. I was just curious to know whether frog farms existed and added that I have enjoyed frog legs. This IS a forum on frogs and a topic like this shouldn't be a deterrance to the hobby. Maybe a bit insensitive, but I was actually more appalled by reading your posts on how they skin cats, harpoon frogs, etc..hahah. Kinda ironic but hey, it's still JUST information.

Maybe information, but I sure would hate to be the recipiant of the preparation process...harpooned alive, and legs ripped out. Worst than being drawn-and-quartered. all just because someone wants a few bites of meat.

You have to remember I have bullfrogs for pets, so I would think it hideous to have them for dinner. simply because they *are* pets. and I'm attached to them

To each his own, no? Personally, I love to eat cow meat... and if I owned a cow, it wouldn't change a thing. No, I wouldn't eat my own cow, but it wouldn't change my habits when it comes to what species I dine on.

I, along with many people, keep fish and still eat them. I don't think anyone would expect a fish owner not to eat fish, right? Why is it any different for frogs? I mean, it's great that you wouldn't do that and I understand to a point, but it's not fair to put your own morals, devised because of what pets you keep, upon others! I've kept anoles since I was little and love them very much, so, no, I could never use them as feeders. I don't get upset if I see a post about someone using them as feeders, though, even if it's on the anole forum. I respect your opinion, but don't think you should expect others to restrict their conversations because of it.

If I were a pet, I would rather have my owner eat me than die and be eaten by nightcrawlers. Not that I'd eat my pac man frog... I was referring to the cow.
