I've never offered maggots to mine, but East Bay Vivarium sells them for herps ... I don't see why not. If you're talking about "wild collected", keep in mind that flies are notorious for ingesting feces, which makes them excellent carriers of all sorts of worms & bacteria.

What about flies, themselves? They quick enough?

hi

i was thinking of using them because www.grubco.com has a "SUPER SAMPLER" which includes:

100 Fly larvae
100 Medium Mealworms
50 Waxworms
50 Mighty Mealys
25 Superworms

i know my leo can have the mealworms, the superworms, and the waxworms.... i'm not sure about mighty mealies, so i might just try and feed them or use it for fishing..hehe. i just dont want the 100 fly larvae to go to waste do you two think that the super sampler is worth it? it's $10, not including S&H. thanks for your help!

sotik: i'm too slow for live flies my leo's slow too

Well, it's only $10, but I think it might be better to see if Marlene will eat those insects before you stock up.

I thought this was an interesting read: www.skipio.com/Muscad1.htm

You might want to try small superworms. They're the same size as mealworms, but they move a lot more.

yeah i was gonna get the sampler just to see what she'll like... if she doesn't eat it, i know my FBTs will... lol! i just want to add a little variety in her diet so she's not so strung out on mealies (even tho that's her staple diet).

also, thanks for the link, i'll be reading up on it when i get home from work - i'm trying 2 be discreet in browsing this forum... lol~ also, should i just order small supers online? coz i know petsmart has them but they are the big ones. and thanks again for your help!

I got my small superworms from superwormfarm.com, but I also managed to buy some more at a show when I asked ahead of time for them to have them. Caesar loves them. He could hear them moving, even before he saw them. So he came out and ate half of them. But then half an hour later, I saw him coming out to finish the rest off.

If you do try the fly larvae, let me know how it goes. I think I'll be sticking to mealworms, superworms, and crickets but I am curious.

Well, $10 isn't much (at least I don't consider it much to waste if you're experimenting). Is that package for herps or for fishing though? lol

I, personally, wouldn't really want to use maggots, crickets, or cockroaches (though crickets are fairly healthy, I guess). And I'm not sure I'd use mighty mealies, simply because regular mealworms and superworms would seem to suffice. I'd like, eventually, to have a nice variety to feed them. Maybe I'll just breed bugs.

yeah i'm thinkin that the $10 isnt too much and i'm just goint 2 use them as an experiement 2 see what i can add in her diet 2 give it some variety. i'll stick to mealworms as her staple though, which is why i started breeding them. but, the wax worms i have and the future supers, i doubt i'll be breeding... just adding a couple every few days into her dish i believe the package is for herps - and the mighty mealies are for the bigger herps... if they're too big i'll just sell them on craigslist or use them for fishing just so my money isn't going to waste.

my leo used 2 eat crickets with her previous owner, but i got her going on mealworms since the day after i got her. i don't plan on feeding cockroaches just coz i can't deal with them - i'd freak out 2 much, ESPECIALLY if those things got out and wandered around my room! omg! i'd go nuts and hey, if u breed bugs, i got some $$$ hehe

I understand not wanting to feed them cockroaches. And your plans for their diet sound cool. If I ever get into serious bug-breeding I'll let ya know. :D
