Possible eggbound female

tokay_dude1 Nov 25, 2003 01:41 PM

Alrights guys..I need your help on this one.
I have a gravid female leo as some of you know. Shes been eating pooping..etc. All the normal stuff a leo should be doing..Although, she has been gravid over a month now I'd say maybe 5-6 weeks..The eggs are somewhat visible and she is big..She has shed twice since i got her (Nov 1st) at the reptile show I saw her in the container and asked the breeder if she was gravid he turned her upside down and said definatly. so im worried now..she could posibly become eggbound.. so..yeah this is a worry for me..i've had some bad luck with my leos..my first after a while passed away not to long ago from crypto..and my male Rayne could pissibly have coccidia. And my juvi Frito hasnt been eating..but he's not loosing any weight so im not to worried about him..Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

giving her warm baths may help but I wouldn't recommend handling her to much as to not stress her out. Dont rub her tummy or anything like that. Make sure an egg laying box is there for her and easy to get in and out of. has she been digging in it at all?

I have also been in the same situation. Got a leo a month ago, saw she was gravid, and have been waiting for the eggs. They are really becoming visible now, so could anione tell me what the signs of a female that is about to lay? She has began to eat less, is that a sign? (she has the lay box and everything, and it is not another animal that is stressing her, since I moved her cagemate out 2 weeks ago) How long are leos usually gravid?

Try a warm moist hide. Placing the moist hide partially over the UTH induced some of my stubborn females to lay. Also what are you using as a substrate in the moist hide? My leos will lay much more readily when they can really dig. I usually have 1.5 - 2 inches of bed-a-beast in their hides.

Hope this helps,
-Alice

P.S. Females will hold their eggs for varying lenghts of time. My first female, Cleo, takes for ever and lays huge eggs...
