Trimeresurus venom?

alkee42 Nov 25, 2003 05:16 PM

How toxic is the venom of the Trimeresurus species? I know it will vary from snake to snake, so how about Waglers temple vipers, mangrove, popes , and white lipped vipers? Are these considered life threatening or more like the eyelash viper. Also do they have antivenom for the Trimeresurs?

Thanks in advance,

Jeremy

Most Trimeresurus bites are not life or limb-threatening. However, all snakebites are unpredictable, and fatal envenomations have certainly been recorded, at least for T. albolabris. Moreover, cases of serious necrosis can also occur.

Antivenom against T. albolabris is made by the Thai Red Cross in Bangkok. It may provide some protection against other species as well, but don't count on it (particularly for T. wagleri).

Cheers,

Wolfgang
