Old beardie getting better.

PhunkeyPhish Jun 01, 2003 02:59 PM

Well i just got done feeding him the third cricket today. From this morning when i thought he was dead, till now on the third cricket, he seems a lot more lively and willing to eat. Also hes getting plumper, since he hasnt been eating hes gotten thin. I hope he keeps on eating like this through the day, i think if i can get him eating a few crickets in one session he should be on the road to recover i would think.

Have you taken him to the vet for a check-up and a fecal check....it may not be time for him at all.....may be that he has parasites which diminish appetite and make them ill.

Good news! If you are really concerned about him, take him to the vet.

That is really good news for him and you.

From what you say he is up there in years, but we know females that have produced fertile healthy eggs at this age and males that are still breeding also.

He is not in the spring of his years, but he can still have many more there. Interestingly, bearded dragons in their natural habitat are known to have live to 25 years, but in captivity 7-12 is about what is known at this time.

He's a wise old man at this time and maybe just is slowing down or having bad days, if all fecals are clear and he seems fine otherwise, indulge him at this time.......he has been fortunate to have you.

Another thing you could do for him is go to a local pet shop and get a bird syringe feeder. Then get some green bean and chicken baby food. Mix that(1 part chicken to 2 parts green beans) with some luke warm water and give it to him. He will probably lick it up right off the end of the syringe. I brought back my little girl collared doing this. She had 2 eye infections and couldn't see a damn thing. Poor little peanut. I worked with her every day. I would put the chicken baby food with some mushed up wax worms (for some fat) with luke warm water. Once a day she got that and 2 times a week I added some miner-al suplements for cal/D3 help. She is well and very aggressive now! Eating on her own like a starving lion! Doing the syringe thing will also keep him nice and hydrated. But, your guy might be 10-13 years old? Don't really know?
GOOD LUCK!
