CRESTED GECKO SKIN......is this normal??????????????????

cv768 Nov 25, 2003 06:49 PM

Ok this is how it works.

The crested gecko's skin will be really pale and kind of whitish, looking like he's ready to shed, then after I mist him it goes to a normal brown color but as soon as he's dry later on in the day his skin goes pale again.....What am I doing wrong???

My guess is that he is about the shed and the water is just darkening the old skin.

I agree with LdyPayne on this one... just keep an eye on him.

I've noticed with mine that her colors vary a LOT. like when she's sleeping she's practically white but when she gets excited (feeding time or being handled or if i'm misting her cage ect) she colors up to a bright orange. So it could be normal. i would keep an eye on him just in case there is some kind of problem. i really dont know that was just my two cents.

Nobody has really written a book that has the proper info on these guys have they???

All I hear is that they are the perfect gecko and they will someday surpas leo's in popularity but I don't see a book for sale on the shelves yet so how are people supposed to know how to care for them??? Internet sites and forums are good but books are harder evidence and facts that somehow seem 100% more reliable.

Any clues on where to find literature on these guys???

If it hasn't shed yet, it's probably just as GreenTea says; they change colors throughout the day. Here's two pics of one of mine at different times. The color change can occur in a matter of minutes.

As for the book, the one mentioned by someone else in this thread is awesome. You can also find it at giantgeckos.com. It covers all rhacs, but the pictures are worth the $40 price alone. There will be another book coming out soon and I think it focuses on Cresteds only. It should be around $10, I'm told.

Here's Kirby cooled down

And here he is fired up

I'm thinkn that maybe the water might have been a bit cold and caused for the skin color change. Maybe? I don't have a crested, but my collard changes color depending on if shes warm or not. Just an idea. Hope you figure it out

I don't think you have a problem. I also have noticed day and night colr changes on my little guy(or girl)
