Box Turtle Hybernation in San Diego County

Rhar Nov 25, 2003 08:05 PM

It appears that my box turtle is in hybernation because he is in a hole under a thick pile of mulchy leaves in his pen... I haven't seen him out in a week or so... Evening temperatures have dipped to the 40's and 50's...Can I assume he is hybernating?

I can't tell if he's hybernating by his uneaten food because we have seen lizards and neighborhood cats near his pen who may be eating it.

Thanks for any advice you may have!

He is no doubt hibernating because of lowered daytime temperatures and shortening days. Read my above post on the best wasy to hibernate a turtle.
