Feeding question

DeltaWoods Nov 25, 2003 08:17 PM

Which would be better for a healthy 3 foot long ball python? Small rats (50.00 - 85.00 grams) or medium rats (90.00 - 170.00). Not sure of the weight of the snake but he looks healthy (isnt skinny or anything). Thanks.

hmmm....i feed mine small rats (3 feet and robust) but, the small rats i get are 90-100 grams each...so id go with small medium rats. or large small rats.

I would recommend you to start with the small rats. If it looks like the snake hardly even has to work to swallow it, then the mediums may be okay. I believe in working up to the ideal size, rather than a drastic change, though I have no reason to believe that my "theory" holds any weight scientifically. But significantly larger prey (than your snake is used to) may scare your snake a bit. Might not be a problem with f/t, but live rats can put a bit of a scare into a snake.
