Had a Uro dumped on me-PLEASE HELP!

triturus Nov 26, 2003 06:04 AM

Until recntly, I have mostly been a newt person. That was until two days ago, when a friend's roomie moved and left his Uroplatus gecko with me (literally on me doorstep, in freezing-cold weather) as a "gift". The animal is small, only around 3.5 inches long. It is brown and looks almost like a dead leaf. I'm not sure what species it is. The thing is in a five-and-a-half gallon aquarium over what appears to be some kind of bark, with fake plants and wood and a water bowl. What should I do?

Most importantly you should try to identify what species you have. Did your friend NOT know what he had?

You have a digital camera take a pic and post it, if not look up different species and look at some photos.

Some have different needs, humidity, temps, have to ID him.
But crickets should do well, for food no matter what species ya have. (for now) When your able to tell us more, about what he looks like or find out what he is, more people can help with his needs. Good luck of now. Eve

It's a satanic leaftail. I'm guessing it will need a humid aboreal tank?

uroplatusguy Nov 27, 2003 12:34 AM

try a heavy planted tank with an inch or so of rock for draniage and then dirt and then plants and a pothos plant. heavy mist him and keep a low level uv ligh on his tank 2-3 week old crickets 3 times a week you can give hima low phosphuorus calcium pwder on the crickets. good luck and have fun with him.

What temps do satanic leaf tails like?

Also, would a tank with more climbing space be better, or do they prefer "long" terrestrial cages?

72-76 is very good temps. they like humidity at about 70-80%.
long cages are perfered but i have a pair in a 20 high and they enjoy it alot more than i thought they would.
